Campaign performance / a basic metrics check

Free ROAS Calculator

Use ad spend, attributed revenue and attributed orders from the same period to calculate ROAS, cost per order (CPA) and average order value. No signup.

Three inputs. No signup.

Illustrative example
Ad spend€1,000
Attributed revenue€3,000
Attributed orders30
ROAS3.00x
Cost per order€33.33
Average order value€100
Profit?Still unknown.
Revenue and acquisition cost do not include your product costs, shipping, fees or other business costs.

Three familiar metrics

Measure the campaign. Then check the business.

Use ad spend, attributed revenue and attributed orders from the same period and attribution source.

01 · RETURNROASAttributed revenue ÷ ad spend. Revenue generated for every euro spent.
02 · ACQUISITIONCost per order (CPA)Ad spend ÷ attributed orders. This is not necessarily the cost of a new customer.
03 · ORDER VALUEAverage order valueAttributed revenue ÷ attributed orders. The average value of an order.

The missing question: What does an order leave after variable costs, and how much can you afford to spend to acquire it? ROAS alone cannot tell you.

Use the same currency and period for spend and revenue. CPA here means ad cost per attributed order. Customer acquisition cost (CAC) needs new-customer counts and a defined acquisition-cost scope. These metrics do not calculate profit, break-even CPA or allowable acquisition cost. Attributed sales are not proof of incremental sales.

Understand the economics

Move from campaign metrics to business thresholds.

These guides explain the calculations with worked examples. The basic calculator above remains limited to ROAS, cost per order and average order value.

Maximum allowable CPA

Find the difference between first-order break-even and the cost per order your target can support.

Break-even ROAS vs. target ROAS

Translate contribution margin and the amount you want left into a revenue-to-spend threshold.

Same ROAS, different profit

Compare two businesses with the same reported ROAS and different costs.

From the book · Ads Don’t Fix Weak Math

“Advertising is a magnifier. It accelerates what already exists in your business, good or bad.”

Florian Coman · Ads Don’t Fix Weak Math

ROAS needs context. Revenue from ads is not what remains after product, delivery, payment fees and acquisition costs. A good-looking ROAS can still lose money.
Know your break-even CPA. Each order has a maximum acquisition cost before first-order contribution reaches zero. Calculate that ceiling before you raise the budget.
Scaling changes the equation. CPC, conversion rate and order mix can change as you spend more. A positive result at today’s inputs is a starting point for testing, not a promise.

What is AdsMath, and who is it for?

AdsMath is a paid advertising economics calculator with a Decision Guide PDF for ecommerce owners and media buyers. It connects traffic cost, conversion rate, order value and contribution margin so you can explore what an order can support in advertising cost. The package costs €49 once, with no subscription.

Before increasing a budget. Compare modeled cost per order with an acquisition-cost target based on your margin and desired amount left.
When ROAS looks good but the economics do not. Include variable costs to see the estimated contribution remaining after ads.
When deciding what to test. Compare changes to CPC, conversion rate, order value and margin while holding other assumptions steady.

Your inputs

Ad spend, cost per click, conversion rate, average order value and contribution margin after variable costs. Use a consistent revenue basis and period. The calculator also lets you work toward an amount you want left per order.

Your modeled results

Estimated clicks, orders and revenue; contribution before ads per order; modeled advertising cost per order; target advertising cost per order; and the amount left per order after ads.

What the model does not prove: These are scenarios based on your inputs, not forecasts or guarantees. Contribution after ads is before fixed overhead and taxes. Average cost per order is not necessarily customer acquisition cost: orders can include returning customers. Future purchases, cash flow and incremental sales require separate analysis.

Included in the €49 package

Use the Calculator to explore your assumptions, and the Decision Guide PDF to understand the calculations and the trade-offs behind them.

The person behind AdsMath

Hi, I’m Florian.

I’ve worked in advertising since 2001 and with Google and Meta campaigns since 2013. I work with ecommerce and education businesses on paid acquisition, tracking, and the decisions behind their ad budgets.

AdsMath is how I connect campaign performance to the economics of the business: traffic cost, conversion, order value, variable costs, and what remains after ads. The Calculator and Decision Guide PDF help you work through those numbers yourself.
